Modeling Driver Distraction from Cognitive Tasks

چکیده

Driver distraction has become a critical area of study both for research in investigating human multitasking abilities and for practical purposes in developing and constraining new in-vehicle devices. This work utilizes an integratedmodel approach to predict driver distraction from a primarily cognitive secondary task. It integrates existing models for a sentence-span task and driving task and investigates two methods in which the resulting model can perform multitasking. Model predictions correspond well qualitatively to two of three measures of driver performance as collected in a recent empirical study. The paper includes a discussion of the potential for building multitasking models in the framework of a productionsystem cognitive architecture.

Modeling Tools for Predicting Driver Distraction

In contrast to the vast amount of modeling work focused on desktop user interfaces, recent work has increasingly focused on “off-the-desktop” interfaces, one prime example being in-vehicle interfaces used while driving. This paper highlights four recent approaches to predicting driver distraction from in-vehicle interfaces as secondary tasks: hand-crafted modeling with the full-fledged ACT-R ar...

Driver performance effects of simultaneous visual and cognitive distraction and adaptation behavior

Driver distraction has become a major concern for transportation safety due to increasing use of infotainment systems in vehicles. To reduce safety risks, it is crucial to understand how fundamental aspects of distracting activities affect driver behavior at different levels of vehicle control. This study used a simulator-based experiment to assess the effects of visual, cognitive and simultane...

Driver Visual Behavior While Using Handsfree

Driver distraction can arise from sources internal as well as external to the driver. In this paper we describe a study (in progress) designed to examine the influence of internal distraction, created by cognitive tasks, on drivers’ visual behavior and vehicle control. Sixteen drivers will drive a city route while carrying out tasks of varying cognitive complexity. The tasks and their responses...

Driver Cognitive Distraction Detection Using Driving Performance Measures

Driver cognitive distraction is a hazard state, which can easily lead to traffic accidents. This study focuses on detecting the driver cognitive distraction state based on driving performance measures. Characteristic parameters could be directly extracted from Controller Area NetworkCANBus data, without depending on other sensors, which improves real-time and robustness performance. Three cogni...

Getting start with UTDrive: driver-behavior modeling and assessment of distraction for in-vehicle speech systems

This paper describes our first step for advances in humanmachine interactive systems for in-vehicle environments of the UTDrive project. UTDrive is part of an on-going international collaboration to collect and research rich multi-modal data recorded for modeling behavior while the driver is interacting with speech-activated systems or performing other secondary tasks. A simultaneous second goa...
